What to Bring to a Laundromat: The Complete Checklist
Pack for an easier laundromat trip with a complete checklist for sorting, detergent, payments, stain care, drying, folding, safety, and bulky loads.
The essential laundry kit
Start with detergent measured for the number and size of loads you expect to wash. Pods travel cleanly, liquid handles pretreatment well, and powder can be economical. Use high-efficiency detergent when the machines call for it; too many suds can leave residue and extend the rinse.
Add stain remover, dryer sheets or wool balls, a small container for coins, and two bags or baskets so clean clothes never go back into the hamper that carried dirty laundry. A marker or luggage tag helps distinguish your supplies on a crowded folding table.
Sort before you go
Sorting at home saves time and reduces the chance of dropping a sock on the floor. Separate lights, darks, towels, and delicate items. Check pockets, close zippers, fasten hooks, and place small or delicate pieces in mesh bags. Read care labels for anything unfamiliar.

Plan two ways to pay
Bring quarters even when a listing advertises cards, and bring a card even when you expect to use cash. Coin machines, bill changers, and payment terminals can fail independently. Avoid carrying more cash than you need, especially for an evening visit.
A reusable laundry card may require a small initial purchase or minimum reload. Keep it after the trip if the laundromat is convenient. Mobile apps can show cycle status, but install the app and create an account before arriving if you want to avoid doing setup beside a washer.
Bring the right amount of detergent
More detergent does not make clothing cleaner. Follow the product line for a medium load and adjust for soil level, water hardness, and machine capacity. Concentrated products need especially careful measurement. Excess soap can trap odor and leave towels less absorbent.
If you use bleach, fabric softener, or scent beads, carry them in leakproof containers and use only the labeled machine compartments. Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. For shared machines, wipe obvious residue from the dispenser before adding your product.
Make waiting and folding easier
Pack headphones, a book, water, and a charger or battery bank. Free Wi-Fi is helpful, but a backup activity prevents frustration. Keep sound low and leave enough seating for other customers. Children may need a quiet activity and a snack that will not create crumbs around clean clothes.
For folding, bring a clean cloth if you prefer to cover a public table. Fold or hang wrinkle-prone items immediately. A few hangers and a garment bag are worth the space for work shirts, uniforms, and dresses.
Special items need special supplies
For a comforter, sleeping bag, or pet bedding, bring enough bags to keep bulky clean items off the floor. Check the label and choose a washer with plenty of room. Dryer balls can help separate thick layers, but low heat and extra time are safer for many fillings.
For athletic gear or heavily soiled work clothes, pretreat at home and transport them in a sealed bag. Some laundromats restrict oily rags, horse blankets, or items contaminated with solvents. Call before loading anything that could damage a machine or affect other customers.
A five-minute departure check
Look inside every washer and dryer, including the upper rim and door seal. Check the folding table, chair, payment kiosk, and floor around your machines. Count baskets, detergent containers, hangers, and personal items before walking out.
Finally, leave machines ready for the next customer. Remove lint if the facility expects customers to do so, discard used dryer sheets, and wipe up spills. A complete kit saves money, while a considerate routine keeps the shared space pleasant.
